Abstract

This thematic paper aims at two objectives; 1) to study the meaning and importance of Dhammapadagatha, 2) to analyze Dhammapadagatha in the case of verse ‘Abhittharetha kalyāne etc.’ by reviews of related literatures; Tipitaka, commentaries, sub-commentary as well as other related scriptures, suggestions from advisor, then the researcher brought to correct and compiled by descriptive type. The findings were as follows;

Dhammapadaṭṭhakathā and Gantharambha came from Dhammapada and Atthakatha which means the commentary explaining the teachings based on its source such as 37 Factors of Enlightenment of any doctrine among 4 types; Anabhijjhā, Abyāpāda, Sammāsati and Sammāsamādhi or the scripture dealing with the section of doctrines, i.e. Jhāna, Vipassanā, Magga, Phala and Nibbāna. This Dhammapadaṭṭhakathā contains the teaching mixed with stories called as Nibbana which addresses the cause of the said verses of the Buddha at the beginning, the stories presented the personal, places, events etc. in the Buddha’s time and Jataka as the past causes for understanding. Some story short while some long. In the end of each story, it concluded that by these reasons the Buddha had delivered teaching by such verse. Some has only one verse, some more than one. The commentator ended up by summarizing and its additions done by himself which became well-known by Pali education of Thai Sangha as ‘Kae-Attha or content solution’.
